Today was San Diego Zoo day – sadly I was not a girl scout and didn’t go prepared with my spare camera battery so I didn’t get all the photos I wanted but I got a good number still.
This is a very bizarre looking species of bird. I find them utterly fascinating to watch.
Their babies look like over grown cotton balls dusted in cobwebs.

And they have a number of different approaches to napping. They do win the award for the longest length of time spent on one leg.

There’s the hang the back leg out nap.

If monkeys did pray I’d assume a look like this.
This bird has a rather unfortunate face.
I felt the gaze on me and to be honest, I felt judged.
Not a bad place to stop for a meal. The waterfall was a nice background accompaniment to the conversation.
The Gorilla exhibit was quite busy.
The youngest in the pack regarding the unfathomable humans.
He felt the need to move to a bit more front and centre position.

So he could display his youthful skills in chest beating.

Once his manly display of expert chest thumping was clearly conveyed he decided to stop for a snack.
The more mature members were content to just sit and pose.

Tim was happy to note their fish collection was of the same species he has back home, he doesn’t miss his fish anymore.
This was the last photo I got to take before my camera was all “Camera says noooo.”
We then caught the bus back to downtown, stopped off at the Post Office and checked out Nerd HQ in 7th Ave. Know where to go now for our panel on Sunday afternoon. Stopped off, picked up a couple of drinks and some snacks and got waylaid on the way back to the hotel by the annual Comic-Con Zombie Walk. The San Diego PD were involved in making sure there were no incidences of Zombie related violence happening and there were placards of random strangeness like WHAT DO WE WANT! BRAINS! When do we want them? BRAINS! Again with the adults getting dressed up and putting heaps of makeup on. It did cross my mind about this could well happen for real one day and then how would we look back on those days when we used to write books, make movies and tv shows and actually pretend it was happening. Personally I hope it does stay in the realms of fiction because I am quite confident that a zombie apocalypse would severely cramp my plans for life.
What I have also noticed about San Diego is that dogs are welcome everywhere. They were walking round Comic con yesterday and no one was batting an eye. In fact most of the restaurant, bars, pubs, eating and drinking venues of any kind on 5th ave seem to have some form of dog water bowls set out, either permanent fixing or set out early in the day. Some ever provide free dog treats. They’re welcome in the hotels too, there seems to be a much high number of vet centres and also dog related stores. I like.
Tomorrow we’re going on a Safari and watching a cheetah run really fast.
