There’s A Moon Over Bourbon Street Tonight…

Well not tonight. But there was when we were walking down it our first evening spent there in the city of Jazz, Blues and that particular kind of guitar I forget the name of right now. It is also the city of fantastic food, seemingly endless amounts of astoundingly cheap alcohol and many dens of iniquity. Food, booze, sex and partying plus a passionate Saints football following makes for fascinating people watching. Tim and I got to spend two nights here and luckily at least two of the days out of the three we were here had clear skies and surprisingly little humidity on at least one of the days.

The RIVERWALK New Orleans is in the above three images, with the Natchez paddle steamer in the background of the first photo.

First stop of the day was at the renowned Cafe Du Monde famous for their Beignets – a type of French donut. These certainly give Krispy Kreme a run for their money.

Jackson Square is across the road from the Cafe and it is cordoned off from vehicle traffic to allow artists to display their wares and also work on their latest pieces.

I liked the colours this guy used and also his slightly creep subjects.

The skulls were very vibrant! Of course I read the sign about no photos AFTER I had snapped this pic. No one came after me brandishing an axe so I escaped unscathed.

All of the above photos were taken around Jackson Square.

On our last day before we drove to Florida we visited one of New Orleans famous cemeteries. The fascination with the dead is very much a part of the fabric of New Orleans and their cemeteries are always an interesting walk around.

We had two very good meals in New Orleans, one at a bar/restaurant called Vacherie where there were some very passionate Saints and Packers fans watching the game, as well as a couple dressed in a Bears and Cowboys jerseys who were flying out the next day for the Dallas Cowboys/Chicago Bears game at the Dallas Stadium. Sadly pretty sure the Cowboys Missus was back drowning her sorrows in the same bar the next day. We had a very nice appetiser serve of a Crab gratin which was delicious! Then the following evening we went to a place called K-Pauls Louisiana Kitchen. I had the ‘Dancing Crab Legs’ (they weren’t dancing – it was just the tip meat of crab legs done very nicely) and the Blackened Drum and Filet Steak. A surf n turf if you will. These were some of the best tasting meals we’ve had all trip so far.

Oh and credit to Sting (who turned 61 yesterday) for the title of this entry – one of my favourite songs of his called “Moon Over Bourbon Street” a great vampire tribute song to the Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles that started with Interview With The Vampire. No one has ever done Vampires quite as much justice.
